Dry eye syndrome is a combination of signs and symptoms that leads to mild, moderate or severe ocular discomfort and pain (as if a foreign body were in your eye).  The condition can be caused by a large variety of factors, ranging from adverse environmental considerations to ocular and systemic health factors.
Everyone is vulnerable to dry eye syndromes, especially those caused by environmental factors like pollution, pollen, wind, ultraviolet light, smoke, etc.  People with allergic conditions are at greater risk for symptoms and women are more vulnerable due to normal or abnormal hormonal changes.  But the foremost risk factor for dry eye syndrome is aging.
Dry eye syndrome can be of a moderate to severe degree that reduces quality of life and can even be sight-threatening.  These moderate to severe forms often require special tests, technologies and laboratory evaluations to accurately identify and diagnose their underlying cause(s) and to treat appropriately.  In many cases, such testing is not available or not conducted during routine eye care.
This is the reason for the Northeast Florida Center for Advanced Dry Eye Care – for the advanced treatment of moderate to severe dry eye conditions.
